Many Academy360 students come to us with the need for Assistive Technology Devices or Services identified in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability in support of their learning and development.
AT may include communication devices, software to facilitate learning, adaptive switches, page turners, book holders, modification of tools and utensils, equipment to support mobility, physical barrier modification, audio augmentation devices, and much more.
Our Instructional Teams include a Computer Teacher, Speech Therapists, Reading Specialists, and Occupational and Physical Therapists well-versed and trained in the assessment of need and provision of AT devices and services. When necessary we have access to Rehabilitation Specialists in the community to assist our teams and ensure that the right AT devices and services are in place, helping to maximize learning and development.
Our instructional approach at Academy360 includes Universal Design for Learning (UDL), an educational framework based in cognitive neuroscience that guides the development of flexible learning environments that accommodate individual learning differences. Because UDL focuses on assessment and the use of materials and methods that facilitate learning opportunities for ALL, our eyes are always open to the introduction of new and innovative ways to support the individual student. AT is thus a critical and ever-present component of instruction.
