John and Kyra Gardner have become generous supporters of Spectrum360 | Independence360 (I360) after witnessing the impact the organization has had on their son, Alex, who has been part of the I360 adult program for five years. Their commitment is deeply rooted in their appreciation for the program’s influence on Alex’s life and its mission.
In the early days following Alex’s diagnosis on the autism spectrum, the Gardners faced discouraging advice about his future. Refusing to let Alex be defined by perceived limitations, John and Kyra were determined to create opportunities for his growth. Their perseverance paid off when Alex graduated from Ramsey High School, achieving milestones that once seemed impossible. “He walks, he talks, reads, and writes—it might have taken him a little longer, but he does it!” Kyra exclaimed.
When the family relocated to Morris County for their business, they sought a program that would enrich Alex’s life—not just a standard adult day care. Through friends, they learned about I360 and were immediately drawn to its personalized approach. After meeting Kim Rushmore, the program director, they felt an instant connection to her passion and commitment. Although there were no initial openings, they eventually secured a spot for Alex.
Once enrolled, Alex’s world opened up. “We knew it was a place where he could continue growing,” Kyra reflected.
Alex describes the staff at I360 as “my people.” Each day, he excitedly announces, “I’m going to see my people,” as he heads off to the program. His happiness, John notes, stems from the top; when the leadership genuinely cares for the adults, it fosters a sense of belonging. “I can’t imagine where we would be without I360. For a parent, you want nothing more than for your child to belong, to be accepted, and to feel safe.”
Since joining I360, Alex has become more independent, participating in community activities like shopping with friends rather than relying solely on his parents. “They don’t do next. They do now,” John explains, emphasizing the consistency that I360 provides, which is crucial for individuals on the spectrum.
Moved by the positive impact I360 had on Alex and their family, John and Kyra became active supporters of the program. They used their professional expertise and personal relationships to help I360 navigate challenges, secure funding, and expand its services.
With the Gardners’ support, I360 secured essential furniture for its expansion from partner, Global Furniture Group, and they even redecorated Kim’s office to brighten her day, recognizing her dedication to the program.
John and Kyra’s commitment extends to fundraising efforts, including their involvement in Spectrum360’s annual golf tournament, which has seen record participation and helped raise over $150,000. They aim to grow it even further, leveraging John’s previous experience running similar events.
As they reflect on their journey, John states, “We were taught to leave the world a little better than we found it.” Their story is a powerful testament to love, determination, and the joy of giving back. Through their unwavering support, the Gardner family has become more than just donors to I360—they are partners in the mission to help individuals like Alex thrive and reach their full potential.
