I am a speech therapist because…
I received speech therapy in elementary school for articulation and I’ll never forget how much fun it was. When it came time to choose a major in college, I reflected back on those memories, as I always knew I wanted a job that could allow me to make a difference in others lives.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
SLPs do it all! Many people think our jobs are limited to remediating speech sound disorders in children. We can work across the lifespan and our scope of practice includes articulation, fluency, cognition, language, voice, feeding/swallowing and hearing.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
When first working with a student, one of the biggest initial challenges is gaining their trust and establishing rapport. I have students with personalities and skills that have absolutely blossomed compared to when I first started working with them. In order to develop a plan with appropriate goals, we need to be able to see the student at their full potential.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
As SLPs, we are on your team! While we may be the communication experts, you are the expert on your child. Some advice would be to keep an open line of communication with your child’s therapist, and celebrate both the big and small wins!

About myself…
I attended Montclair State University for my Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, and again for my Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I just completed my degree in December of 2023, and Academy360 is my first “real” job since graduating! I have learned so much in just these short months, and I am excited to continue to grow here as an SLP.

I am a speech therapist because…
As a Psychology undergrad I always knew I wanted a career that allowed me to work directly with others but didn’t know how. After volunteering at the Adler Aphasia Center I was introduced to the field of Speech Pathology and fell in love with the positive impact that speech therapy had on the members.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
We work across the lifespan, from babies to adults, and beyond just speech sounds. From communication to feeding we really do it all!

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
Not only focusing on the “right now” but the bigger picture. What is the most functional for their future?

About myself…
I got my B.A. from Seton Hall University. I then moved on to get my Master’s of Science in Communication Disorders from William Paterson University. Fun Fact: I was a graduate speech intern at Academy360 during graduate school!

Speech and language therapy is an exciting and varied career. It offers you the chance to make a difference in people’s lives and to help them better communicate.  It is a career that provides a high degree of flexibility, but is so challenging and fulfilling, too.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
We treat and work on so much more than articulation errors.  At Spectrum 360, we also help students with language skills, problem-solving skills, social skills, executive functioning… and more.  And, SLP’s can work in so many varied settings, such as hospitals, schools, early intervention (client’s homes), residential health care facilities, colleges and universities, non-health care facilities, etc.

10 years this July! Crazy!

I am a speech therapist because…
I was inspired to study speech therapy and pursue it as a career because of my profound appreciation for communication and the opportunity for one-on-one attention and the time to work on speech and language skills step by step. This personalized approach allows me to tailor interventions to each individual’s unique needs, fostering meaningful progress and building a strong foundation for effective communication. I firmly believe that communication and trust form the cornerstone of any thriving relationship. Witnessing firsthand how communication challenges can significantly impact an individual’s emotional, physical, and relational well-being deeply motivated me to delve into this field.

Moreover, I’ve always had a passion for language and the power of using one’s voice to advocate for oneself and to express thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. This aspect of speech therapy, where I can empower individuals to communicate effectively and confidently, resonates deeply with me. In particular, I’m drawn to the area of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) because it allows me to provide my students with the tools they need to express themselves externally when traditional means of communication are limited. Being able to facilitate this fundamental human connection through AAC is incredibly rewarding and reinforces my commitment to this profession.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
There’s a common misconception that speech therapy is solely about teaching proper articulation, but it’s so much more than that! Speech-language therapy actually covers a broad spectrum of areas. Our profession spans nine domains, each playing a crucial role in communication and overall well-being. These domains include articulation (the clarity of speech sounds), fluency (the smoothness of speech), voice and resonance (how our voice sounds and resonates), cognition (thinking skills like memory and problem-solving), hearing (the ability to hear and process auditory information), language (understanding and using words to communicate), social communication (interacting with others effectively), swallowing (the ability to swallow safely and efficiently), and communication modalities (alternative methods of communication, like sign language or AAC devices).

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
When you’re just starting to work with a student, especially someone with autism, there are some initial hurdles to overcome when developing a plan. One biggie is building trust and a good connection with the student. That sets the stage for everything else and makes learning a lot smoother. Then there’s the teamwork aspect. Getting the student’s caregivers and teachers on board with the plan is crucial. After all, what happens in therapy sessions should match up with what the student needs to do in everyday life and with different people. At the start, we focus on teaching skills that are super practical and can be used in lots of situations. That way, the student can apply what they’ve learned in different places, not just in the therapy room. It’s all about setting them up for success in the real world!

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
To the parents of a newly-diagnosed child, I would offer words of encouragement and gentle guidance. Firstly, I’d say “take a moment to breathe. In the whirlwind of emotions and uncertainties, remember that your child is still your child. Embrace the love and connection you share, for it will serve as a steady anchor for the learning journey ahead. Know that advocacy is your greatest gift to your child. You are their fiercest champion! Trust your intuition, speak from the heart, and never underestimate the power of your voice in shaping their path forward. There is a wealth of support and resources from speech-language pathologists and other related professionals. They bring not only expertise but also compassion and understanding to guide you through the complexities of your child’s communication needs. Empower yourself with knowledge, understand your rights, explore available resources, and trust in your ability to make informed decisions that resonate with your child’s unique needs and aspirations. Above all, remember that you are not alone. Seek solace in the company of fellow parents, in the embrace of support groups, and in the wisdom of those who walk this path alongside you.”

About myself…

With 12 years of experience in the field, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and my Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Seton Hall University. Specializing in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and language disorders, I’ve accumulated extensive experience working with children facing various communication challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), childhood apraxia of speech, fluency, receptive and expressive language disorders, among others.

Driven by a passion for empowering individuals who cannot rely on their natural speech for communication, I am currently in the process of launching my own consulting company called “Betsy’s Voice”. Through “Betsy’s Voice”, I provide knowledge, training, and advocacy to support individuals in finding their voice and navigating the world of communication. My own journey, which included experiencing a voice disorder that temporarily limited my ability to use my voice, deeply influenced my mission. These personal struggles served as the catalyst for “”Betsy’s Voice””, inspiring me to create a space where individuals facing similar challenges can find support, guidance, and ultimately, their own unique voice.

In addition to my professional pursuits, I am a talented singer and worship leader. Alongside my husband, a professional musician and music teacher, I co-own an entertainment company called “Nothing But Velvet”, where we lead a musical band on a mission to deliver versatile, pleasurable, and sophisticated musical performances to every event. Family, rooted in faith and love, is my top passion and priority. I treasure every moment spent nurturing my family’s bond and building a home filled with faith, love, and music.

This is my 37th year at Spectrum360!

I am a speech therapist because…
I used to “force” my two little brothers to play school with me when we were small kids. I guess I’ve always known that I would want to teach in some capacity.  Later on, I decided that combining my love of teaching with my love of language would be the perfect fit!

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
I think one of the first and most important challenges we face when beginning to work with a student is being able to develop a positive rapport. It’s essential to figure out the student’s preferences and motivators as well as any fears or anxieties that may exist. You need to both earn the student’s trust and establish yourself as someone enjoyable to be with. Once this foundation is built, you can move on to the next challenges such as identifying specific deficits and prioritizing the most functional goals.

A few weeks — I started in May 2024.

I am a speech therapist because…
I have been working with children for almost 15 years, and realized very early on just how much we take communication for granted. I wanted to be able to help others express themselves, because everyone deserves to be heard.

\What everyone should know about speech therapy…
Speech-language therapy is a very broad field! Areas we can work on can include: articulation, language skills, social skills, auditory processing, feeding/swallowing, oral motor exercises, fluency, AAC, and many more!

About myself…
I have my Bachelor’s in Psychology from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 2017, and I obtained my Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology in 2021 from Montclair State University. I have been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for the last three years and love what I do! I am a speech therapist because…
I worked at a summer camp for special needs kids and enjoyed it. After getting my BA in Early Childhood Ed, and teaching pre-school, I decided that I wanted more of a “specialty” that would focus on the specific needs of a child.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
It’s not just articulation! Learning to say your /r/ or /s/ correctly is important but it SO much more…Conversation, Listening/Auditory, Memory, Vocabulary, Grammar are just a few other areas we work on with our students. It is an amazing, creative and rewarding career!

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
Figuring out what motivates them and making it fun.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
YOU are your child’s first teacher. Read to your child, engage, interact, stimulate, expose them to different environments and experiences. Teach them life skills like washing dishes, folding laundry, making the bed, cooking simple meals (make it like a game not a chore when they are young). Help them to be independent. Don’t do everything for them. Make them advocate for themselves. Don’t forget that in order to carry-over skills into the home, it can only be done if you practice those skills when you are home.

Always remember that there is help out there and you are not alone!

I am a speech therapist because…
I have wanted to be a Speech Language Pathologist since I was in pre-k. This fun woman would come into our class and do all these activities. I never understood why she did not pick me to have time outside of the classroom with her. I went home one day crying thinking I was bad. . My mom and the SLP sat me down and explained that I did not need speech.  She said one day I could be an SLP and that is exactly what I did. I chose to work with this population because I wanted to help people. Everyday is something new and seeing our students succeed is the greatest feeling. I also have a passion for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).  I love being able to show our students the power of their voice.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
We do a lot more than r’s and l’s.  Articulation is just a small (yet well known) part of what we do.  Our scope of practice includes 9 key areas of speech and language development.  We can work with newborns to adults in a variety of settings.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
The most important part of working with a new student is establishing rapport not only with the child but with the family and other staff as well.  Every student is unique and connecting with them while assessing their skills is crucial.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
Early intervention and treatment makes a huge difference.  Don’t be overwhelmed with all the things your child might not be doing at this moment but support what they can do.  Never underestimate your child, they are capable of so much!

I will be finishing up my 21st year this June

I am a speech therapist because…
I was inspired by my mom who was an assistant teacher at a preschool and who told me of educators who were coming into her classroom to work with students one-on-one. She was the one who first introduced me to the idea of speech therapy. I did a bit of research on my own and talked to another speech therapist to get more information. I then decided to change my career and go back to school to study speech pathology.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
I would like people to know that speech therapy is not just helping students learn how to produce certain sounds. Speech therapy is about communication which not only encompasses correct sounds, but learning how to interact with each other using the appropriate tone of voice, body language, words, sounds and alternative means of communication if the natural voice is not available.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
The challenges are getting to know your student to see what goals and objectives need to be worked on and then to figure out what motivates the student to achieve those goals. Also, working with the parents can sometimes be a challenge if their goals for their child are different from what you see. As a therapist we need to make sure to work with the parents so that there can be carryover at home.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
As difficult as it is to hear that their child is going to be faced with many challenges, there are many services available to them. These services and interventions will help their child to develop skills that will allow the child to live a full and meaningful life. I would suggest that once the parents have been able to digest the new diagnosis that they look to find therapists and programs to work with their child, so that their child has the greatest opportunity to succeed.

About myself…
I attended Washington University in St Louis Mo where I obtained a BA in Economics. Then received an MA in Communications Disorders from Montclair State University. Most recently received a Supervisory Certificate from Rowan University.  I have worked at Spectrum360 as an SLP for almost 21 years and have also done early intervention and private speech and language therapy.

I loved the idea that I could work with and help a variety of ages from birth to geriatrics, assist a wide range of disorders/disabilities, and work in multiple settings.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
Building trust and rapport with a student takes time. A child will not work with or learn from a therapist they don’t trust or feel comfortable with. Creating a bond with a student is the foundation for successful therapy and growt!

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
Everything will seem overwhelming at first, but everything will be okay. Remember every child has their own timeline and to celebrate every big and small step your child (and you) accomplish!

I am a speech therapist because…
I originally began my college career as an acting major, but during my sophomore year of college I took a speech for the stage course where I was exposed to some basic anatomy related to speech as well as the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). This sparked an interest in speech for me, and I began researching other professional opportunities when I came across speech-language pathology. Being a speech-language pathologist merges my desire to help and support others as well as my love of speech, language, cognition, and the many other facets related to the field of speech-language pathology.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
Every student is different and requires an individualized plan for treatment. It takes time to build rapport with each student and assess his/her speech and language abilities. This includes evaluating the student during speech and language sessions, observing the student within the classroom, and incorporating input from both the student’s family and the classroom team. A lot of time and effort is put into developing an appropriate treatment plan for each student in order to best support their individual needs.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
My advice to the parents of a newly-diagnosed child would be to utilize the support systems that you have. It can be overwhelming understanding and navigating new diagnoses and services, but your child’s team is here to support both your child and your family. Voice your questions and concerns as they come up. You know your child better than anyone else and your input is invaluable.

About myself…
I received my bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from Rutgers University and my master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Montclair State University. There’s a lot of science behind what we do. It isn’t just language based. We are considering so many more elements than what meets the eye, such as sensory systems, motor systems, birth history and impact, medical conditions, etc.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
Establishing rapport with both the student and their family so you can make the best decisions that will be carried over and motivational.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
Do your best to become educated about the diagnosis and take advantage of each training available to make the best decisions for your child and your family.

How long with Spectrum360?
I have been here a little over a year.

I am a speech therapist because…
As a child, I was very quiet and had a hard time speaking up for myself. As I got older I wanted a career helping children communicate to the best of their ability no matter what the challenge was.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
I think it is important to remember, we are also human. We have knowledge in communication and how to elicit communication skills, however it is a team effort. We have tools to share and it is a team effort from all, staff and family to help the student communicate.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
Confidence, when you first begin working with a student, you want to make sure you are doing the very best for that child. It can take a little time to understand exactly what a student’s needs are, however once you learn more about that student(s) plans of how to help them with their communication flows more smoothly.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
It can be scary and daunting not knowing what the future can look like, however be open to help and know we are here to help your child make progress . That can look differently with trying different communication techniques, but it is always for the greater good and we, as speech therapists, are here to hear you and help guide you.

About myself…
I have 20 years of experience. I graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a Master’s degree in speech pathology and audiology. I have worked in many different settings, from public schools, to clinics, to home care, to having my own practice. I currently work here and found a great community of caring staff who want to help each student reach their best potential.

I always wanted to work with children with special needs. I started taking classes to learn more about speech/language and communication disorders and fell in love with the field!

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
Most people think SLPs help children speak more clearly and say their sounds better; and we do, but that is just a small part of what our job entails. Articulation, feeding and swallowing, stuttering, voice, counseling families, cognitive and social aspects of communication all fall within our scope of practice.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
It’s important to first build rapport with the student. Really get to know them and allow them time to get to know you and build a relationship so they trust you. It can be challenging to evaluate a student and determine what goals to prioritize as well as creating fun and engaging activities that are unique and individualized to each student.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?

I am a speech therapist because…
I always saw myself working in the healthcare field being able to help others, but wasn’t interested in nursing or medical. Speech therapy seemed like the perfect field to combine my creativity with helping children. I also love how diverse our field is, and how much room for opportunity there is. Our scope of practice is so broad that we are able to work in settings ranging from newborns in the NICU to geriatrics in a skilled nursing facility. Although I have experience in various settings with various age groups, working in a specialized school with young kids has quickly become my passion!

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
So often I tell people that I am a speech therapist and their immediate response is something like, “oh, you help kids say their r or s sounds?” While that is part of our scope, I would like people to know that we work on so much more than just articulation. Especially working at Academy360, we have the opportunity to work with such a diverse population and get experience with everything from feeding to augmentative communication.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
Just that we are here because we love what we do and we love working with our population. We are always willing to help and guide parents with honest feedback on whatever challenges they may be facing. I also hope parents know that we care for their children like our own, and work so hard to help them succeed and achieve independence.

I am a speech therapist because…
Communication is the pathway to living a quality life. It is the foundation to independent success, forming relationships and engaging in social interactions. Speech therapy is providing individuals with an opportunity to participate in the aspects of life that are most meaningful. I wanted a career that helped close the gap that so many families work tirelessly to fill.

What everyone should know about speech therapy…
Speech therapy treats a variety of disorders and the speech department at A360 is well versed in many. It is important to be flexible, patient and quick on your feet to switch from student to student. At times, progress can be slow but all progress is meaningful. Speech therapy must be individualized for each student and it is vital to prioritize what is most functional. It is necessary to be educated in many other areas to be able to identify when there is a need to co-treat or modify the current plan.

The main challenges when starting out with a new student?
The challenges we face vary by student. Individualizing plans can be tricky when there are other factors to take into consideration such as motor ability, cognitive function, behavior and sensory needs.

Advice for parents of a newly diagnosed child?
Receiving a diagnosis can be scary and overwhelming. However, the speech department is well trained in the various needs a child may require and will assist in every step of the way. It is important to have open communication with the team so they can create a plan that is functional, meaningful and individualized.
